Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium is set to become the third-largest ground in the Premier League as the result of a £50 million expansion plan, the Independent reports.
The club will submit an application to have the capacity of their ground increased by 6,000 to 54,000, taking them above Newcastle United’s St James’ Park and Sunderland’s Stadium of Light in terms of the number of fans they can fit in on match days.
Manchester United’s Old Trafford has the highest capacity for a football club’s ground in England, with 75,000, with Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium the second-largest at 60,300 capacity.
The planning application will be submitted this autumn, according to the report, subject to a consultation process with the local area, and may include provisions for further expansion in the future that could mean the city of Manchester has the top flight’s two biggest football stadiums.
