Will the Nigeria people stand aside and just look! Are we going to allow our government get into the selling craze? And sell all our national heritages simply because it cannot manage it. In this tempestuous mood nothing is sacrosanct.
The present leadership doesn’t have respect for our great nation, why would anyone contemplate selling the National Theatre, a piece of our national history, our national pride, just for the shameful excuse that government cannot manage it? Has government forgotten that the National Theatre in our history, our tradition.
The National Theatre was purposefully built to host the Black Festival of Arts and Culture, otherwise known as Festac’77. It was the biggest gathering to celebrate the black man’s culture and spurned a resurgence of pride in black people. Some in the United States, thereafter, began a search for their roots.
It was at the National Theatre that a series of conferences that gave more impetus to the liberation struggles in Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe were held.
The sale of the National Theatre and the National Stadium is not an option.
The National Theatre is an epitome of black unity Abuja on the other hand is false majesty, it holds no history of the Nigerian supremacy and cultural heritage. Selling the national theatre, is an unimaginable idea for and canvassing for that idea, uncalled for, sometimes one begin to wonder if those behind some of these decisions are truly Nigerians of charlatans simply parading them self in the corridor of power.
We may not have the resources the other 1st world countries have, but with more respect for national heritage, we can find the will to maintain these facilities by creatively generating more activities around them.
