The threat of terrorist bombings, kidnappings and other crimes in Nigeria has skyrocketed the demand for security guard companies. As we hear of Boko Haram bombings almost on a forth nightly basis and kidnappings every single day, the opportunities to start a security guard company is now high as business moguls, politicians, celebrities and other high profile individuals seek to protect themselves…. Even the common man protects himself too because people have been kidnapped and ransom was paid in recharge card vouchers rating to N500, 000 (these kidnapper their eyes dey red these day o!) Please note before I proceed the security companies is not the police force (‘no be olopka o’’!) so they do not have the same authority. They are only responsible for the safety of their clients and their property. Below are some well researched basic steps on how to start a security company in Naija’’:
Step 1- Acquire the necessary training. Go for security training courses that will teach you strategies of how to protect your client, self defense, gun and baton handling and other tools of your trade. Having a military or law enforcement background will help in starting your security business. If you do not have any of such back ground, do not worry, just make sure you use training programs that is recommended by the military and police. And make sure you pass those courses. Endeavor to be the best security guard you can think of because the lives and property of your clients will be your responsibility to safe guard. I also advice that you work in a security guard company for a while before you start your own outfit. That way, you will have the experience to build on.
Step 2-Business Niche. As there are many services a security company can offer, spend some time researching the industry to determine what jobs your new Security Guard Company can start with. Businesses security, events security, patrol services, vehicle security, body guard services, surveillance video-monitoring center, family security are services security companies offer depending on their capital and manpower.
Step 3-Register and get the proper licenses for your business. Endeavor to get register your security company with the Corporate Affairs Commission Nigeria (CAC Nigeria). You will also have to get licensing from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) because they are saddled with the responsibility of regulating and controlling the activities of private security companies in Nigeria. You should also get the gun permits if your employees are going to be carrying firearms. But bear in that individuals with criminal backgrounds or under the age of 17 will never obtain license to carry firearms.Step 4-Choose a location for your office. This will serve as where administrative duties are carried out and individuals can come to apply for positions in your business. You can employ the services of a real estate agent. And also hire a good interior decorator to design the reception area and meeting room. A good first impression matters a lot here.
Step 5-Security business is a “people skill” business so before you can start your own security company in Nigeria, you need to hire and properly train employees. Be sure your employees are efficient in interpersonal communication skills, crisis management, security strategies etc. You will need to perform background checks on every individual to plan to employ. A security guard with a criminal background is serious bad business for you. You should also screen employees to make sure they are drug free. You can employ the services of a HR company to do the work for you. Get them uniforms.
Step 6-Get comprehensive insurance coverage.Step 7-Bid on contracts. Search for event places and businesses that are in need of security guard personnel. Bidding on contracts can be very competitive in the security industry. Other ways of getting clients are Spread fliers, business cards, word of mouth and placing ads in local newspapers. Remember that the growth of your security business depends solely on you. Train your employees very well because their actions will determine if your clients will retain your services or not.
