The richest car guy on the planet is not Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk. It’s not even a guy at all. BMW heir Susanne Klatten is the richest person on the Forbes Billionaires List to have made her money in the auto industry.
We valued the 50-year-old German at $14.3 billion, up $1.3 billion from 2012, making her the 58th-richest person in the world. Klatten is the fourth-richest person in Germany behind a couple of supermarket heirs and discount retailer Dieter Schwarz.
An economist by training, Klatten inherited a stake in BMW from her late father, Herbert Quandt, who rescued the company from bankruptcy decades ago. Susanne, her brother Stefan Quandt and her mother Johanna Quandt are each billionaires and together own nearly half of BMW, which has continued to grow despite weakness in Europe thanks to sales in the U.S. and China.
Klatten additionally controls chemical manufacturer Altana and holds stakes in wind power outfits and carbon and graphite producers. Last year she bought stakes in a Dutch biotech company and an oil recycling company. She lives in Bad Homburg, Germany. has Over 450,000 views, Read&Follow this blog daily, twitter handle @udeozo
